Log onto Twitter and at the top to the right of the Twitter logo is a menu. Click "Settings". Then click on "Profile" and you should see something like the image below.
As you can see I already have my own Avatar and as a new user to Twitter you will have the usual Twitter bird icon. You may just see "Choose File" button rather than "Change Image" so click that and you will have a box open to let you go through your folders. Find the image you want and then press "Open". While we're on the Profile section of your Twitter account I would advise you to add your blog's address and a small biography on yourself. Now click "Save" at the bottom of the page. Ta da! You have your own avatar!
Now lets sort out the background. Go back to "Settings" and this time click "Design".
You should get something like the above image. There are pre-made themes to pick from or you can do your own look. Click "Change background image" and a list will pop up. Click "Choose File" and pick what you'd like for your background and then "Open" once you have chosen one. If you'd like the image to be tiled then tick "Tile background". Now click "Save Changes" and you're all set!
