Top Five One-Size Nappies

After doing my top five cloth nappies I realised how hard it was to pick just five and so though I'd do top five list for different types of nappies. So here are Petit Mom's favourite one-size nappies and why.

Bumgenius Freetime
Okay this nappy does cost a bit more than some, however it is well worth the cost and not only is it so easy to use, it will last to potty training and will happily continue working well future babies. Best of all you can choose poppers or velcro, it's all up to you. If you are looking into cloth nappies for your new baby and people are asking for gift ideas then why not ask for some Bumgenius Freetimes!

Smartipants
What I love about Smartipants is the no-mess system that the inserts come out during the washing cycle, meaning you never need to touch the soaking wet insert. The Smartipants make great day time nappies and the poppers are strong. These are great value as well, however if you have a heavy wetter you may want to buy some more inserts just incase.

Close Parent Pop-in
I've used older pop-in nappies and love them and now their brand new nappies are out and even better than before. You can get them with minkee or bamboo inserts, bamboo being great for night time and they also sell night time soakers separately if you wish to become a full-time cloth user. They also do printed nappies as well, cost a bit more than their basic coloured nappies, so depends if you like the added cuteness value or don't mind that much.

Tots Bots Easyfit
You can get some fantastic new prints or just the bright colourful easyfits. They are a little bit expensive, however you can ask if people could buy you some NapNap Vouchers to use towards your new baby's cloth nappy collection, as some websites who use these vouchers also sell Tots Bots Easyfit nappies.

Baba+Boo
A one-size pocket nappy. What a like about these nappies are the option to shorter or double over the inserts, plus you get two inserts for each nappy! They are a fantastic price and come in lovely colours and patterns. Perfect day time nappies all the way to potty training age.

Top Five Cloth Nappies

I'm asked about cloth nappies often, especially by new-parents and soon-to-be parents find me at The Baby Show (the pink hair and the Smartipants/Tots Bots bags make me easy to find) and then it hit me. Why don't I write a blog post with my five favourite cloth nappies? I will admit picking them wasn't easy but I highly recommend these.

Smartipants
If you want a one-size pocket style nappy but don't want to get your hands in to remove the urine-filled insert then Smartipants is perfect for you. They have a pocket that has two openings and is made so you simply put the nappy in the wash with the inserts still inside and they will pop out during the wash cycle. Smart, right? No wonder they have the name Smartipants! They aren't too expensive and come in lovely colours. Great for day time use.

Little Lamb Microfibre Fitted Nappy
Along with a Little Lamb wrap this is a brilliant and super soft nappy. You can buy it in different sizes which means it'll fit snug and has velcrow fastenings. The wrap they sell also helps lock in around the leg so you will be free from any accidents. Microfibre is also fast drying too and for me this nappy is usually nearly dry after a full washing cycle. I can simply hang it out to dry and within an hour it's practically ready to be worn! Great for bed time if your child is a bit older and not weeing so much during sleep.

Bumgenius Freetime
Another one-size nappy but this one is just great from their funky and colourful designs right down to the fact they allow you to choose from popper or velcro fastening. But what I love the most is there are two inserts which are part of the nappy and you never have to remove them, they are sewn on to the back and front meaning you won't ever lose them and after drying it is already got the inserts so you just lay them down and put the nappy on! Recommend this for day time use.

Tots Bots Bamboozle Stretch Nappy
I've been using my two for a few months now and man they are so soft, specially considering they are bamboo and most bamboo I own goes stiff and hard. These need a wrap but what I like is they have poppers down the side to make smaller and bigger. These come in two sizes and make good bed time nappies.

Little Lamb Bamboo Fitted Nappy
Bamboo is brilliant for big wetters, although I do find they need a tumble dry once in a while to keep soft. But even when a bit stiff it's still super absorbent. Again with the Little Lamb wrap this nappy comes in different sizes and with it's velcro fastening it gets a perfect fit. Great for bed time and super wetters.

Oh man it was hard to pick just five but I think I did a fairly good job. I've not put prices up as these vary from retailers all the time and can change, but I hope it has given you a good idea on cloth nappies.

The Baby Show - Interviews with Trunki, Stokke, Close Parent, Smartipants & Pourty

The Baby Show at Birmingham NEC this year was brilliant, and to see so many more cloth nappy companies here compared to ExCeL was a positive thing for me, especially when I spoke to them and they all said how they got loads of interest so many thanks to The Baby Show and big cheer to all the brands who travelled far and wide to show their beautiful products off to the mums and mums-to-be*.

Review: Smartipants Reusable Cloth Nappy

Have you ever considered reusable nappies? Not sure if it's the way forward. Smartipants contacted us and offered us the chance to try out their one-size cloth nappy. Our thoughts? Read onward!

We had considered the reusable way of nappy life before having a baby but time flew by and we didn't really know what nappy to buy as there are so many out there you can buy, we just settled in the end with Pampers nappies and left it at that. Smartipants are £13.50 each and as it's one size you don't have to worry about getting bigger sizes as your baby grows! The snap fastenings are simple to clip and firm so they won't pop off as your little one wriggles around. There is a removable sleeve insert with the nappy which fits fairly snug into the nappy. And when the nappy has been used and you're not too keen on removing the sleeve then don't! The sleeve can easily come out during the wash cycle. What's more important is cloth nappies are VAT free in the UK, disposable nappies are considered to be a luxury so you could be saving yourself more money by going reusable.

We were use to the super absorbent powers that are in disposable nappy and I had been told that cloth nappies do not last as long due to lacking the chemicals used to make the disposables last so long and absorb so much. Upon first try it lasted about two hours before he had a little accident. Maybe I put it on wrong, perhaps it was too loose, so we wash it and try again. Washing is was easy, the cloth insert came out during the wash and was able to dry it out within 3 hours. The next test included a smellier and dirtier problem... poo! I wasn't sure exactly what to do as I have never used cloth nappies before! In the end I removed the solid bits, dipped it in some warm water for a bit and then put it on a warm wash. hours passed and the cycle ended to give me... a perfectly clean nappy that smelt fresh! I was amazed that there was no sign of any soiling and not a single stain could be found upon inspection.

Using reusable nappies such as the Smartipants nappy could save you as much as £1,300 per child over the course of just a few years. Smartipants are considered to be the most advanced reusable nappy on the market today and are also affordable too. You can help the environment too by going reusable. Every year 200,000 trees are cut down and 80,000 lbs of plastic are used to make disposables. That's a lot of dirty nappies going to landfills! Smartipants nappies are built to last and guarentee high quality snaps for as long as two years.

We do have some issues with this nappy we'd like to bring up. We found the nappy would last about two hours, three if lucky. This would mean we'd need a lot of cloth nappies just for one day and also would probably mean accidents would happen at night time, something we haven't had problems with since he was a newborn. I also thought "what if he needs changing when we're out?" and the thought of having to carry a poo-filled nappy around until we got home didn't sound like a great idea, compared to disposable ones which you simply put in the bin provided.

Pros
- Eco-friendly and saves you money in the long run.
- Cloth nappies are nicer to your baby's bottom compared to disposables.
- Great choice of colours.
- Cheap!
- Easy to put on.
- Don't have to buy a size up after a few months.

Cons
- Don't last very long.
- Tricky when out and about.
- Need several to last a whole day.

 So what do our judges think of the Smartipants cloth nappy? Let's find out!

Oh an interesting result! Baby Al likes the refreshing feel of cloth nappies on his sensitive bum. Petit Mom does think they are a good investment, but wishes they'd last just at least four hours.
